CHAPTER 18

Mama, Where Are You?

Late the next day, Pa came back, but he was alone. “Where’s Mama?” I left off scrubbing the table. “Is she outside?” I went to the door and looked out into the yard. Abe was patting down the horses. His face was all twisted up. “What’s the matter with Abe?” I said, looking around for Mama.

“He’s fretting,” Pa said. “Your aunt Betsy passed last night.”

“Oh!” I sank down onto a stool. “Aunt Betsy,” I mumbled, trying not to cry. “Oh, Aunt Betsy.” I sat there, my head drooping, thinking of all the things I loved about Aunt Betsy, how kind she was to everyone, even her grumpy husband, how she cooked the best apple fritters, and how she made Mama laugh with her stories.
